This blog post will touch on the book's Mentor Text by Lynee R. Dorfman and Rose Cappelli, Textbook Amy Krouse Rosenthal by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, Shortcut by Donald Crews, Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson.
Today I gave my friend whom I work with the piece of paper from the book Textbook Amy Krouse Rosenthal. She was shocked and asked me what I was doing. I told her to read it. As she read it she laughed and said that she would cherish it forever. She then said maybe she could sell it to pay for her trip to Australia, since the author had signed it. This was a great experience seeing how someone reacts to a piece of paper being torn out of a book. I liked that my friend was shocked because that means that she probably likes and cherish's books.

Currently I am on page 128 of Textbook Amy Krouse Rosenthal and she asked me as the reader to match myself on her website. In the next 48 hours I will get two other people to be digital pen pals with. I'll keep you updated on how that goes.
If you haven't gotten your hands on this book yet I advise you to stop reading this blog and click this link https://www.amazon.com/Textbook-Amy-Krouse-Rosenthal/dp/1101984546/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1549470185&sr=8-1&keywords=textbook+amy+krouse+rosenthal and buy and read this book.
The way Amy thinks and documents her life is inspiring and thought- provoking.
On pages 106- 109 she defines the word small and what it means to her. I love how this word can mean so many different things and evokes so many amazing and funny memories.
Just look at us, all of us, quietly doing our thing and trying to matter. The earnestness is inspiring and heart breaking at the same time.
This quote stuck with me because I have been thinking a lot about what it means to live versus what it means to simply exist and it is like Amy was having a conversation with subconscious. This quote is on page 121.
This book made me think of one experience I had while taking a shortcut. One weekend last spring my friend had some of her friends up for the weekend and asked if my best friend and I would like to go hiking with them. We both wanted to go. For the sake of the story I would like to introduce the characters.
Taylor- Me, elementary ed major
Megan- my best friend, nutrition major
Laura- the friend that invited us on the hike, elementary education major
Blair- Laura's friend, nursing major
Ok now that I have introduced the characters and their majors (which may seem weird but you will understand why later) I can go on with the story. We ended up hiking the fire tower which is off the parkway in Boone, NC. Megan and I split off from Blair and Laura and we were walking pretty fast and talking about our future and what not. Once Laura and Blair joined we climbed the fire tower and enjoyed the view for a while. After that Laura and Blair wanted Megan and I to hike with them on the way back. The trail is pretty long so we decided to take a shortcut. DUH DUH DUHH!! You probably see where this is going. My friend Megan went first, I followed, then Laura and then Blair. Megan all the sudden grabbed for a tree to steady herself because it was muddy and I hear her scream so loudly that we all froze. "What's wrong?" I ask. "I dislocated my shoulder." Megan said. Now this is not the first time she had dislocated her shoulder. She does it often but Megan does not have high pain tolerance. She started screaming. Now Laura and I are elementary education majors and Megan, herself, is a nutrition major. We have no idea how to help her. Blair is nursing major and we think that maybe she could help but she had never dealt with a dislocated shoulder. We were stuck on muddy part of the trail on an incline at least 2 miles out from the main road. Megan started screaming at other hikers, "Do you know how to pop a shoulder back into place?" or "Are you a PT or in the medical field?" One person stopped and said yes and was willing to help. She ended up not being able to help and we had to call 911. They gave Megan pain medicine and we all rode down the hill with the park rangers and the EMTs and made it to the hospital where they eventually popped it back into place. We will never ever take a shortcut again.
